Baby sitting A Great/ Great Dane- Shelby

This is Shelby, she is staying with us for a while. The wife's brother and family are out of town. So we got the job of watching her. The hardest thing about keeping Shelby is to watch and not trip over her, as you can see she has made her self at home. The other pets are kind of out of joint about the arrangements. We are try to get Spring to spring here on Point Pleasant Road, but mother nature is slow in coming. New chickens and new plants are growing and waiting for warmer weather.

The new chicks have been move out of the incubator and into the brooder, only 5 this time around and hoping more to hatch later. Food and water and plenty of space for them, two more are in the incubator sill need to dry out a little more and one of them is having problems getting it feet to work. Only time will tell. This is the first time for us and it has been really fun. :)`

The peeps are here, It was a long time coming with the ice storm and all. We had to start the process all over again. All the books said 21 day to incubate chicken eggs.after 23 days the eggs start to show signs of hatching. I heard peeping sound ,but dismissed for a bird out side. Ethan came home from school and saw a crack in one of the eggs. That one hatch in the night, four more today. Some of the others show signs of hatching.
This is the first time for us to hatch our own chicks. It is very exciting time for our family. There is one of the picture that shows one of the peep just breaking through the shell.

New Coop

Started a new coop this week, as you can see it is a hoop house. It is amazing what a person can find on the net. I will admit that this is not my idea. I saw a picture on the Internet and copied it. Cattle wire, 3 panels 16 feet long by 4 feet arched over a frame the is 8x 12. This is a great money saver on material. By placing a tarp over the wire keeps out wind and rain. Can easily be place by hand inside or outside depending on the weather. We are going to let the chicken have access to the inside of the pole barn in good weather just for the nest boxes. In the winter time we can bring the hoop house inside to protect it from the weather. When the hoop house is complete I will post new pictures. And more detailed look at our operation.

New Chicks

Rudy the Rooster is a Daddy, 23 chicks hatch Sunday and I brought them home Monday. They are in the basement for a while under a heat lamp. They are doing great, the Kids think they are great also.

We had heavy snow this weekend and slowed things down a bit. The driveway drifted really bad and had to get a tractor and plow it out. About 6-8 inch fell over night. I was thinking that spring was here but I was wrong again. Really muddy out side not much you can but look out the window and think spring.

Rudy the rooster

Rudy the Rooster, has left the building. Rudy has been on loan from a really good friend. Trying to get some hens to go brooding, not having a lot of luck doing that . So I took Rudy home this morning. We have some eggs in a incubator at this time. Could be ready this weekend. Really looking forward to having baby chicks to take care of. Rudy sure did rule the roost while he was here. Rudy is a Rhode Island red and is a great looking bird. We had a great time with him here. I am sure that there will be some great roosters in the new chicks that are coming. Getting late, Kentucky just won the game on the TV. All is well in the state tonight.

Fertitize Eggs going to incubator.

We will be taking about 35 eggs to friends place. He has a large incubator
that he hatches chicks for sale around the local area. The kids and I are looking to expand our chicken operation. We now about 17 laying hens
and can't keep up with egg orders.

Lost One Ginea today

Maggie our dog was playing in the yard, and the chickens got to close to the house. Just as she always has she took them back to the barn in a dogs kind of way. One of our three Ginea was trying to fly back and she ran head on into the barn whamm!!!!. She didn't make it she died on the spot. Sunday feb. 10 2008. Snow in the forcast tonight.
